| EXPLORING CALIFORNIA'S UNIQUE ECOSYSTEM |
For those who want to explore the local
environment, our Nature & Wildlife programs offer guided tours
in some of California's most magnificent ecosystems. These are tailored
to visitor's own interests and schedules, whether for a day, a weekend,
or a longer holiday. These can also be combined with other programs
to create unique multiactivity tours: wildflowers and whitewater;
birds and backcountry; ecology and enology; etc.
Our distinctive
location at the confluence of three major ecosystems adds to the
richness and variety of our programs:
Ecosystem #1: Lowland Wine Country. Much of Wine Country lies in an
environmental area that is a complex mosaic of grasslands, chaparall
shrublands, open oak savannas, oak woodlands, serpentine communities,
closed-cone pine forests, montane conifer forests, wetlands, salt marshes,
and riparian forests.
Ecosystem #2: Wine Country Highlands. The coastal
mountain areas above Wine Country define a beautiful area marked by
unique plant and animal combinations. This but relatively unknown region
has been designated a "biodiversity hot spot" of international
significance and "one of Earth's most extraordinary expressions
of temperate biodiversity."
Ecosystem #3: Northern Coast and
Redwoods Country. The coastal regions near Wine Country are dominated
by the cooling and moisturizing effects of the ocean and fog. This
gives rise to California's magnificent redwoods and the lush temperate
rain forest environment that surrounds them. |
