| BACKCOUNTRY WILDERNESS TOURS ABOVE WINE COUNTRY |
| Highlands Expeditions include our most
challenging and out-of-the- way programs and activities. These take
visitors to wilderness destinations deep in the coastal mountains
above Wine Country. This secluded alpine and river area enjoys a
mild year-round climate and stunning scenery. Visitors will find
they have the area entirely to themselves, with a range of activities
to choose from among: Whitewater rafting and kayaking. Our trips focus on the main stem of the Eel River, which provides some of the best Class II-IV whitewater in California and one of the few year-round runs in California. Backcountry snow sports. Snow in Wine Country? Yes. And lots of it. The coastal mountains above the Eel River provide diverse terrain for alpine touring throughout much of the winter and spring, with options including snowshoeing and backcountry skiing and riding. Highlands ecology tours. Summer and fall are good times to explore the unusual biology and geology of the region, as the snows are gone, days are clear, and the temperatures moderated by alpine breezes. Our tours emphasize the complex plant and animal combinations that have led this region to being described as "one of Earth's most extraordinary expressions of temperate biodiversity." |
