ABOUT US WINE COUNTRY ADVENTURES is a community of people interested in helping visitors make real connections to Wine Country -- with sustainable wine and food producers, with the extraordinary local habitat, with the diverse but untapped outdoor adventure opportunities, and with hidden locations of enormous scenic and spiritual power. OUR TEAM Wine Country Adventures was started by Michael Gerlach, a scholar and entrepreneur with a lifelong love of travel, outdoor adventure, and good wine & food. In recent years, Michael has been developing several ecotourism and sustainable-education businesses in Northern California (see Partner Sites, on right). He is also Professor in the Graduate School at the University of California-Berkeley, where he has been the recipient of numerous academic awards and distinctions. Michael is joined by a small team of experts and specialists in Wine Country travel who work with visitors in all aspects of tour planning and execution. Our team is available to customize programs to your own unique needs and circumstances, including helping you organize successful retreats and other programs for groups, families, organizations, and companies. We not only know the best vineyards, the best hikes and rides, and the best ways to keep a diverse group entertained through a weekend or a week. We know how to get you away from the crowds and the been-there-done-that tourist circuit to see a whole new part of Northern California. WHERE WE OPERATE: TERROIR & TOPOGRAPHY Every part of Wine Country has its own essence -- from the terroir of the soil to the topography of its rivers and mountains. In general, southern Wine Country (Sonoma and Napa) is tamer and more civilized, while northern Wine Country (Mendocino and Lake) is wilder and more scenic. We work with you to determine destinations and programs best suited to your own needs. This includes several "Best Hits" programs that cover multiple destinations and activities. In addition to visiting out-of-the-way vineyards and farms, as well as scenic rivers, lakes, and hiking/biking areas, visitors also have the option to make a daytime or overnight visit to BALOKAI -- a holistic ranch and retreat in an extraordinary mountain and river setting above Wine Country that combines sustainable agriculture, outdoor adventure, and inward spiritual journeys.
